Abstract

The literature of the eighteenth century was outward and finite-outward in the absence of a deep penetration into the heart and mind of man; and finite in the subjects and the arbitrary laws of style and verse to which it was confined. A philosophy of sensualism, a morality of expediency and a poetry of fancy-"Creamy Smoothness"- were the main characteristics of the age.
