Abstract

Volumes have been written by men, who were by far mere capable and in a better position than I, on the various phases of the great Franco-German War of 1870. To claim that this thesis sets forth ideas and historical facts unknown before would be both preposterous and presumptuous on my part I have merely attempted to narrate clearly, impartially, and concisely the logical sequence of one of the most important wars in history - the important roles played by the two leading figures of the 19th century, Bismarck and Napoleon III, the causes, underlying and immediate, of the period of actual warfare, and finally the far reaching results which embraced the whole world in 1914 although the war itself consisted of a combat between only two nations - Germany and France.
