Abstract
Studying Augustine's thought is an exercise in humility. The profound and dynamic nature of his writings insists on an ever-fuller, but never definitive appreciation. This dissertation views Augustine's thought from his "conversion" to the writing of the Confessions from a perspective unusual in modern studies: his use and view of the Bible. At the same time, it acknowledges that such a view is Limited, and can serve at best as one component of a fuller understanding of the nature and significance of Augustine's thought.
