Abstract

A mining dragline boom is basically a long, slender space frame subject to complex in-plane and out-of-plane loading. A successful boom design must address itself to both the structural behavior of a space frame and the fatigue behavior of a welded structure. The purpose of this paper is to define the required design parameters in the logical order they would occur in a typical design process. It is felt that the suggested procedure will describe a rational approach to produce an efficient and yet conservative boom design .
