Abstract
At this time of one of the most controversial subjects in education has been the supposed influx of socialistic and communistic doctrine into the schools of America. It is the purpose of this study to determine whether any of this supposed infiltration has made any headway into the Milwaukee public school system. The first important step regarding this problem occurred in 1941 when public pressure was applied to the textbooks of Harold O. Rugg. It was in reference to six of these books used in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades that an organization of private citizens calling themselves the Guardians of American Education, Inc. issued a pamphlet Undermining our Republic in which they reveal the intent of Rugg to indoctrinate students in socialism. Numerous examples of his socialistic leanings are given through the use of abstracts taken from his writings.
