Abstract
Rare in number are those who are unaware that Catholic schools in the United States continue to undergo careful scrutiny, often coupled with unfounded criticism, both from within and without. Reasons for this recent intensive focus on the century-old Catholic school system are as numerous as they are varied. Powerful and overwhelming challenges have been thrown at the catholic school from the two worlds it serves. From the religious world is hurled the spirit· of aggiornamento kindled by Pope John XXIII and set ablaze by Vatican II. From the academic world the challenges come sallying forth for greater teacher/learning efficiency through new organizational patterns, modern audio-visual equipment, and teacher specialization.
