Abstract

A 1987 survey, cited in Hossler and Bean's (1990), The Strategic Management .Qf Enrollments, revealed that 45% of the institutions they surveyed had no enrollment management organization of any type. Four years later, with the continued decline in the number of high school seniors and the rise in competition for those seniors, one would be hard pressed to find a college that does not employ enrollment management techniques at some level. Should private institutions embrace the concept of enrollment management? If so, what are issues critical to enrollment management? The paper that follows discusses these questions. Chapter One will outline critical issues germane to any university struggling with the concept of enrollment management. Chapter Two will consist of a review of current enrollment management literature. Chapter Three will conclude with implications of enrollment strategies aimed specifically at private institutions.
