Abstract
In the design of reinforced concrete structures adequate factors of safety should be provided against all modes of failure that might occur under the forces that act on the structure during its existence. One general type of failure which should be prevented is "shear failure." This type of failure occurs under combined shear force and bending moment, plus, occasionally, axial load, or tension, or both.
