Abstract
This essay is an analysis of self-help and support groups for parents who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth, or newborn death. A new bereavement support group for parental grief due has been developed. The essay investigated roles of self-help and support groups among counseling alternatives, roles of the group facilitator, ways bereavement groups are conducted, and benefits groups offer to bereaved parents. Observational research conducted at six parental bereavement groups, surveys of 45 group members, and interviews with seven group facilitators reveal that parental bereavement groups differ only in the role of the facilitator. More active participation by professionals and a review of the roles of the "older" bereaved are recommended.
