Abstract

Assessment first entered the vocabulary of psychologists in the 1930's. Academic research in Germany, England and the United States held the premise that an individual's performance was too broad and too complex a phenomenon to measure with pen and pencil tests. Systems were developed whereby multiple numbers of assessors, who used a variety of procedures, including observations and performance tasks, could adequately assess candidates' performance levels. It was also felt that with feedback, learning and actual performance could be enhanced.
