Abstract

This essay discusses the data flow computer concept through a survey of two prototype data flow computers. Current results and terminologies in the data f low computer are introduced. Data flow programs and architectural features required to support these programs are presented. The concept of the data flow computer is then compared with that of the conventional von Neumann computer fol lowed by a brief discussion of the benefits and limitations offered by the new model. A survey of contemporary two data flow computer organizations (MANCHESTER and Utah DDM1) is presented to illustrate the structural features of the data flow computer. The similarities and differences between the two prototype machines are discussed.
