Abstract
From my experiences and observations in thirty years of state registered nursing, I became more and more aware of the needs of the elderly in institutions. With some exceptions, many patients seemed to be apathetic, having little interest, withdrawing, depressed or anxious. A certain air of helplessness and almost hopelessness seemed to permeate their lives.
