Abstract

In reviewing events within the Church over the past ten years it becomes quite clear that there has not been sufficient reflection on the ecclesiastical teaching authority. Accusations of a relapse into the preconciliar absolutism, juridicism, and centralism have widened the credibility between the Magisterium of the Church and the people of God who see little possibility of change in the institutional personal structure of Church leadership in the spirit of the Christian message. This in turn has caused unrest and uncertainty among theologians and laity who no longer think it possible to consider critically and determine anew, in light of the gospels, the nature and function of the Church's teaching authority.
