Abstract
A study of the synagogue in the first century is limited in a way in which a study of an early Christian institution is not. The material from which one could derive a picture of the first century synagogue is severely limited. The literature is minimal. The New Testament makes some references to the synagogue but they are few and far between, and they should be used carefully. It would be dangerous to rely too heavily on a Christian document for information on a Jewish institution.
