Abstract
Destiny alone could foretell that the gentle, god-fearing Andrew Hull Foote from New Haven, Connecticut, would one day be hailed as the naval hero of the battle of Fort Donelson, the battle that turned the course of the Civil War in the West against the Confederacy and strengthened the position of the northern forces in their struggle to save the Union.
