Abstract
Women constituted less than one and a half percent of the dentist population in the United States in 1972. Many reasons have been given for the small number of women who apply to dental schools. Some women find an inherent conflict between the demands of dental training, later on private practice and the demands of the role of wife and mother. Other potential women dental candidates fear hardship and discrimination will be found in a field that traditionally has been a man's profession.
