Abstract
Ages ago learning was obtained at first-hand, often through the field trip which was in most instances the sole means of acquiring information about other places. Then the wandering minstrels and other occasional travelers brought knowledge of far-away places. As years passed, a complete education came to include travel as an essential part of the school program. With the invention of printing, books multiplied and education became universal. Traveling was done through the printed page to the extent that first-hand experience was often thus supplemented.
