Abstract

Biological assay should be understood to mean the measurement of the potency of any stimulus, physical, chemical of biological, physiological or psychological, by means of the reactions it produces in living matter. Bio-assay did not come into existence until about 1925 with the first attempts to standardize insulin. the results were not satisfactory and it was seen that a standard preparation against which other drugs could be measured was most necessary. At present at least 41 international biological standards have been adopted. "The purpose of biological assay is analogous to that of a balance and the standard preparations play the part of the standard set of weights.
