Abstract
Skill as a counselor is measured to a considerable extent by the ability to establish a relationship with the counselee. Unless there 1s a cooperative contact established between the counselor and the counselee, the counseling process may come to naught. While no counselor is capable of establishing rapport with every oounselee, he should, if he has the proper training and personality, be able to relate to most of the counselees who come to him for help. Without such a working relationship, there will be little progress in counseling even with the most expert techniques. Rogers once wrote that in a wide variety of professional work involving relationships with people, it is the quality of the interpersonal encounter with the client which is the most significant element in determining effectiveness.
