Abstract

The purpose of this essay was to design a game to teach nutrition to eight- to ten-year-old children. The paper indicates the current nutritional status of children and adolescents in the United States and specifies their need for nutrition education. The cognitive development of a school-age child is reviewed in relation to the child's characteristic way of thinking and learning at this age. Several reasons are given for the motivational appeal of educational games for school-age children. Included also are findings from several researchers who investigated the utilization of games for teaching purposes.

The design of the nutrition game is discussed in great detail. The writer reveals all components of the game and identifies instructions for playing the game. The game is meant to teach children: about the basic four food groups; the importance of a balanced daily diet; the basic functions of various nutrients; and what foods to avoid to remain healthy. The game is geared to the school-age child's cognitive and psychosocial level of development.

The intent of the writer is that this nutrition game be utilized for health educational purposes. It is expected that the game will appeal to school-age children and motivate them to learn about nutrition. If children learn about and acquire good nutritional habits, their chances of growing and developing normally and remaining healthy should be increased.
