Abstract

Automation, thrust upon the world of industry by rising labor costs and the need for increased productivity to meet consumer demand, has created many new and varied engineering challenges. Both commercial and industrial manufacturers are now producing parts by the million or at least hundreds of thousands where twenty or thirty years ago production of ten thousand pieces annually was considered "high volume". With giant corporations like General Motors producing a fantastic number of automobiles each year and requiring an even more fantastic number of parts to build these cars it becomes obvious that a real opportunity exists in the area of material handling.
