Abstract

Portmanteaus and tin trunks were stacked haphazardly along the walls of the spare, brightly-lit room. Brown pa.per bundles tied with twine added to the clutter. Men gathered in small groups conversed softly in Russian; others, using luggage and boxes as makeshift chairs, passed the time reading or simply thumbing through newspapers. A mustachioed man of fifty pushed back the tortoise shell eyeglasses which had slid down his nose when he bent over to secure the string which bound a bag of oranges. A paper tag was pinned to his khacki shirt.
