Abstract
Without radio, telephone or TV, Sauk Rapids, the county seat of Benton County, Minnesota, during the struggle for statehood was as politically abreast as any city on the Eastern seaboard. Sauk Rapids on the east bank of the Mississippi had its William H. Wood while across the river St. Cloud had its Jane Grey Swisshelm. Both added a touch of the East to the Minnesota frontier. William H. Wood was a staunch Democrat while his competitor, Jane Grey Swisshelm, was an out spoken member of the newly organized Republican Party. A political vacancy, that of county attorney, was the incident that brought Mr. Wood to the then thriving hamlet of Sauk Rapids in 1851.
