Abstract
The purpose of this article is to bring under examination and discuss the most salient and basic terms which are employed in this country to denote the peoples, territories, and history of Eastern Europe. (Since the term "Eastern Europe" has itself been the been the subject of controversy, let us clarify it by assuming that it consists of the territories presently comprising the European portion of the Soviet Union.) Since geographic and historical terminology are intertwined, it will be necessary to explore the uses and meanings of both within the historical context.
