Abstract
It was the purpose of this study to discover the systems , means , and methods by which students are selected for instrumental training. Since instrument al music programs were introduced into the high schools, the selection of students has been of importance . All individuals have at least a limited amount of musical ability. Many of the outstanding pupils are discovered by chance, and many have remained undiscovered. Band and orchestra directors whose job it is, in most cases, to select new students, are aided now by tests which assist in measuring musical talent, but it has been of this authors opinion that other factors influence their selection. At least pure measurement of talent seems insufficient in the selection or this procedure would have become universal were it fool proof or entirely satisfactory in all cases.
