Abstract

The normal distribution serves as a mathematical model for many frequency distributions, both in nature and in industry; in fact, it is so consistently encountered in both instances that the uninitiate to the study of theoretical statistics might well conceive in error the notion that this classic distribution is something guaranteed by the theory of probability in all possible situations. This is obviously untrue: given one dominant cause, modified by a number of second-order effects, the distribution of the over-all effect should be essentially that of the major cause -- which may not be normal at all.
