Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to present a case study of a forty year-old learning-disabled male's struggle toward literacy. It is interesting to note that he was not aware of his specific handicap until he was in his middle twenties. Although the focus of a learning disability is usually the learning situation, its consequences are rarely confined to only school. For the undiagnosed adult, employment, family relation ships, friendships, non-academic functions such as sports, and even dancing, can be severely affected. The major issues of self-esteem, image, and confidence are also part of the picture. Obvious sensitivity to repeated negative feedback and failure in tasks that the typical individual takes for granted, plague the learning disabled. This paper will detail some of their struggles.
