Abstract

From Medieval times through the Reformation and Council of Trent to the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore to the Second Vatican Council, the Roman Catholic Church has been concerned about education generally and about religious education specifically. The Church's concern for catechetics (religious education) is expressed by the fact that the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) is the only catechetical confraternity recognized in Canon Law. Since the time of the Second Vatican Council, this concern for religious education baa been expressed in numerous documents issued either by Vatican Congregations or by national Synods of Bishops.
