Abstract
When Nelson Dewey took the oath of office as the first governor of the state of Wisconsin on June 5, 1848, he completed apolitical history that had started with Nicolet's treaty with the Winnebago,s in 1634. Within two-hundred and fourteen years Wisconsin was a part of two kingdoms, one state, and five territories. It was within this framework that the political story of Wisconsin developed. This story involved men like Henry Dodge, an intrepid, ex-Missouri Indian fighter who personally executed two criminals when sheriff; James D. Doty, who insisted on spelling Wisconsin with a k and an a (Wiskonsan ) until a joint resolution of the territorial legislature put a stop to this idiosyncrasy; and Moses M. Strong, who was not above throwing his cane at a political opponent on the charge of "low pettyfogging on points of order."
