Abstract

Readability factors may be divided into two large divisions-the interests of the child and the difficulty of the text. With regard to the first, Dr. Paul Witty warns that some interests of the child are transitory and some are unworthy of extension. This study will not go into that very involved aspect but into the area of difficulty of textbooks. Some investigators feel that current approaches provide only a superficial estimate of the depth and breadth of the concepts associated with the verbal symbols. No one yet has the answers but many have opinions. New devices for readability re-awaken alertness and drive in the task of helping youth to capture excellence. Dr. Gerald Yoakam says the time has come when teachers must have a method for judging instructional material and evaluating it for readability for the highly intelligent, for the moderately intelligent, and for the deviantly endowed student.
