Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to examine the causes and events surrounding the battle and surrender of Fort Donelson in the Civil War, particularly as these factors affected the Confederacy. It is also the purpose of this paper to establish the importance of that battle and the part it played in the first year of the War of the Rebellion.
