Abstract
Sunday, February 16th, 1862, was a day that marked a notable victory for the Federal forces in their attempt to conquer the Confederate armies. On that day, Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant's army completed the capture of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, a feat which resulted in the trapping of thousands of Rebel soldiers. This was the first time the Union was able to win a major battle over the Confederacy, a victory that opened a door to the south and temporarily cleared Kentucky of significant Confederate forces .
