Abstract

A surprisingly large number of incoming freshmen in a senior high school have difficulty in reading. These difficulties -- rate, variability of rate according to subject matter and purpose of reading, ability to understand words or vocabulary development, ability to read and understand content material -- seem to be influenced by many factors. What, then, is the relationship of reading difficulties to the emotional, the intellectual, the educational, and the personal problems of the student; to the measurable intelligence of the student; to the measurable intelligence of the student; to his leisure time activities; to his individual aptitudes; to his socio-economic level in society; to his school achievement. Because there are so many facets to the reading problem which has become on of growing concern to the entire American public, it is, of course, necessary to confine oneself in its study.
