Abstract

The general area of this study is problem solving in arithmetic. When one speaks of arithmetic, one of the first thoughts that comes to mind is arithmetic computational skills. This is true when only one phase of arithmetic is being considered. Problem solving, however, includes these basic skills plus another art, namely, comprehension of problems. It is this latter phase of arithmetic with which the writer wishes to deal in this study.
