Abstract

Studying the Sino-Soviet dispute can be compared to peeking over a backyard fence and watching one's neighbors engage in a brawl. Since both superpowers are equipped with the weapons of mass destruction, however, any misunderstanding between these two nations has serious ramifications for the future of international society. Generally speaking, each side has vociferously accused the other of fundamentally violating the tenets of Marx and Lenin. This essay will aim at an analysis of Soviet-Chinese relations during the years 1956 and 1957. My contention is that despite countless proclamations of everlasting friendship, the writings produced by both sides during these years indicate that a groundwork for future disagreements was indeed present.
