Abstract

Modern youth is constantly facing new and complex situations creating many social problems. Therefore, instruction in the fundamental knowledge which contributes to responsible citizenship is extremely vital if social conditions are t o be dealt with intelligently and the democratic process preserved. The social studies program has been delegated this responsibility. Jewett and Preston point out that the chief aim of social studies instruction is to build citizens by improving the quality of children's social concepts.
