Abstract

This paper deals with several aspects pertaining to the allowance for doubtful accounts of finance companies. It will be concerned with, first of all, the need for such an allowance; second, with the alternative accounting methods available to establish the account, and to charge periodically the amounts involved; and third, with the factors which affect the alternative choice of methods for establishing the allowance. Finally, a study of financial data for a group of finance companies, covering the period, 1956-1960, is presented to afford some conclusions as to the actual application of the arguments presented.
