Abstract

About two years after its first appearance, The Secular City by Harvey Cox remains one of the most popular and widely read books among both Protestants and Catholics. Without a doubt it ranks among the most discussed theology works of the 1960's. Reaction to it has led to The Secular City Debate which hrought together some of the reviews, issues, and essays that it occasioned and which could be found in an unusually large number of periodicals. Martin Marty and Dean Peerman, in the preparation of New Theology No. 3, agreed that The Secular City was the book of the year and that it served to crystallize the issues in the world of developing theology in the United States.
