Abstract

Leaders in the field of Catholic education in the United States are today facing a crisis. It is a crisis which can be met only in the answers to such questions as: Where are we to find the teachers so urgently needed to staff our fast growing schools?--and Why are our young Catholic lay people hesitating to enter into the Catholic school system as teachers? Faced as we are with an ever growing Catholic population, together with a decline in vocations especially in the teaching religious life, our attention has been focused on the integration of the lay teacher into the Catholic school system. The difficulty of securing and keeping good lay teachers in a diocesan or parochial system is evident.
