Abstract

Not so long ago we were chiefly concerned with providing remedial services for the severely handicapped reader, but today we acknowledge our responsibility for advancing the reading power of all students, including the gifted. Experiments have demonstrated that this aim, although an ambitious one, can be attained if we make provision for grouping efficiently, for assessing individual needs, for stimulating learning of individuals, and for co-ordinating reading instruction and all-school learning experience. Today it is referred to as the developmental reading program.
