Abstract
Over the last fifteen years, a small number of the most progressive American businesses have sought to regain their competitive edge in national and international markets by introducing and developing self-managed work groups. Significant individual and organizational benefits that accrue in this type of work environment have been described in the literature. The important role that management plays in successful self-managed work settings has until recently, however, received only modest attention.
