Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to select the essential technical words employed in science from books used by pupils in grades four, five, and six, and to arrange them into categories of units or concepts involved in a study of science. The study represented an analysis of commonly used texts to discover (1) in what grades concepts are introduced; (2) to what extent they are graded in order of difficulty; (3) to what extent textbooks provide for continuity and sequence in vocabulary from grade to grade; (4) to bring the basic vocabulary of science into focus in order that it might be determined how this vocabulary can be controlled, directed, and strengthened in the intermediate grades.
