Abstract

Belief in the Incarnation made a difference to Gerard Manley Hopkins. Realizing its meaning, he tried to come as close as possible to incarnating its truth in his poetry; the truth was so central it made a difference similar to that between life and death, between joy and desolation. This paper is an attempt to offer another look at what Hopkins may have thought hell to be, another look at what Hopkins' experience of a living hell may have been.
