Abstract
The rational treatment of bronchial asthma requires a knowledge of normal pulmonary physiology, as well as an understanding of pulmonary insufficiency. In this thesis an attempt is made to present the value of pulmonary function tests in the study of bronchial spasm, emphysema, and fibrosis, in order to appreciate uncomplicated and complicated asthma. The clinical importance of developing simple methods of studying pulmonary dysfunction is constantly being realized. Tuft and :Blumstein (17). have specifically studied bronchial asthma and have seen the importance of d,1na.mic, as well as static, spirometry, and have advocated the use of bronchodilator drugs in this study. It should be remembered that spirometry is a laboratory aid in diagnosis which is subject to error and should not be relied upon without corroborative clinical findings. It is acknowledged that the background for pulmonary function study has been laid primarily by Christie, :Baldwin, Cournand, Richards, Warring, and Comroe.
