Abstract

Effects of reduced oxygen tension, prior to and during irradiation, on the radiosensitivity of protoplasmic systems are well recognized; in general, such systems under these conditions exhibit notably increased resistance to radiation insult. By way of illustration, newborn mice can withstand asphyxiation for periods ranging up to 20 minutes. When air-breathing newborn mice are subjected to a lethal dose of x-rays they suffer severe lesions, deep edema and ultimate death.
