Abstract

There is an increase in the need for disciplining high school boys and girls in the Milwaukee area. Most school administrators and teachers on being asked whether any discipline problems exist will usually answer that they have the usual number. This, no doubt, refers to discipline "cases"; in a strict sense, each pupil is a problem. Only a small percentage of them, however, behave in such a way as to require special services which are closely associated with unacceptable behavior. The administrator who has the choice in the selection of his teachers is concerned first with the teacher's ability to guide the school charges to self-discipline. Then, he is keenly interested in the teacher's ability to obtain cooperation and obedience. The latter, while it is not the key to success, is a prime requisite to reaching the ideal class-room situation. It is just not possible that all teachers are able and adequate disciplinarians, teachers, and counselors; for when, in the history of activity, has there been a class of people all of whom were adequate in their chosen work? Teachers cannot be excepted.
