Abstract
Hearing loss, currently the leading physical impairment in the United States, is attributable for 25% of the nation's non-institutionalized disabilities. The United States Census Bureau estimates that of 12,000,000 adults and 3,000,000 children, 4,500,000 are severely disabled and 760,000 are totally deaf. The ratio of males to females is 3:1 and 20% of hearing defects in men are due to injury or noise as compared to 4% for women.
