Abstract

The essay under consideration may be classified as descriptive research. Against the broader framework of Catholic Action -- its definition, characteristics, and aims -- it discusses the history, growth, and techniques of the Young Christian Student Movement in general and, in particular, at Pius XI High School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Imperative to the study was a history and discussion of the Young Christian Worker Movement from which the YCS received its impetus.

The study of the Young Christian Student Movement is both new and necessary. It is new because nothing of this kind has been previously submitted to Marquette University, The Department of Education. It is necessary because it treats a particular organized, specialized movement whose primary aim is the formation of Christian lay leaders in their milieu, a formation which must begin before college and post-grad years.

Because of the nature of its aims, the essential flexibility of its operations, and the developmental stage of its history, tangible effectiveness of the Movement cannot be measured. The essay makes a decided effort, however, to submit evidence of its operations and effects on the student environment of Pius XI High School .

It is hoped that those who have had no previous acquaintance with YCS may make it here, together with an understanding of its history and growth.
