Abstract
On the morning of June 17, 1972, Frank Willis, a security guard at the Watergate Apartment complex, found a bolt lock that was held open by strips of tape. This guard had found tape on this same lock two weeks earlier. Believing that a burglary was in progress, Willis called the police. The Washington police arrived, and they apprehended five men in the offices of the Democratic National Committee. (This was the second burglary of this office by these five men, who had reentered to replace a faulty bug.) The police found that these men had telephone listening devices, camera equipment, and $3,000 in their possession. The Washington police contacted the FBI for information on these five men. Using its massive fingerprint files, the Bureau identified these five men as James Walter McCord, Bernard Baker, Virgilio Gonzalez, Eugenio Martinez, and Frank Sturgis.
