Abstract
A great deal of emphasis has been placed in recent times upon the education of the gifted child. The demands of our modern society have placed a premium upon those students whose natural intellectual abilities enable them to excel in the academic fields of science, literature, and the arts. However, it is the whole child with which education must deal. Physical as well as mental abilities need to be challenged by the modern school curriculum. These children are in need of a well thought out physical education program which will enable them to develop the stamina necessary to withstand the demands which their adult activities will place upon them. They will need physical outlets by which pent-up emotions, tensions, and frustrations may be released in a healthful way.
The purpose of this study is to determine if the physical capabilities of gifted children differ from those of comparable children of normal or average intelligence. Knowing the capabilities of the gifted children will make it possible to design a physical education program which will meet the needs of this group.
